What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?
A routine exam and professional cleaning is the foundation of preventive care. At each visit we inspect your teeth and gums, screen for oral cancer, take any needed x-rays, and remove the plaque and tartar that daily brushing leaves behind. Most patients benefit from a cleaning every six months.
Why are they needed?
Even careful brushing and flossing miss areas where plaque hardens into tartar. Left in place, tartar irritates the gums and leads to decay and gum disease. Regular cleanings remove this buildup, and regular exams catch problems while they are still small, simple, and inexpensive to fix.
Who is a candidate?
Everyone — from young children to seniors — benefits from routine exams and cleanings. Patients with gum disease, a history of decay, or certain medical conditions may be advised to come in more frequently than every six months.
What happens during the visit?
We take any necessary x-rays, then perform a thorough exam of each tooth and the surrounding tissue. A hygienist uses gentle scalers to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line, polishes the teeth to lift surface stains, and applies a fluoride treatment. The visit is comfortable and typically takes under an hour.
