What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Wisdom teeth — the third molars at the very back of the mouth — are the last teeth to come in, usually in the late teens or early twenties. Because the modern jaw often lacks room for them, they frequently become impacted, come in at an angle, or only partially erupt, causing pain, infection, and crowding.
Why would Wisdom Teeth Removal be needed?
Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can trap food and bacteria, leading to painful infections, decay in the neighboring molars, cysts, and crowding of the front teeth. Removing them early — before the roots are fully formed — makes the procedure easier and the recovery faster.
Who is a candidate?
Most teens and young adults benefit from an evaluation in the mid-to-late teens, when we take a panoramic x-ray to see the position of the wisdom teeth. We recommend removal when the teeth are impacted, decayed, or likely to cause problems, even if they are not yet painful.
What happens during the procedure?
We review your x-rays and discuss sedation options to keep you comfortable. After numbing — and sedation if you choose — we gently remove the teeth, often in a single appointment. We provide detailed aftercare instructions to manage swelling and keep the sites clean as they heal over the following week.
