Wisdom Teeth Removal

What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?

The wisdom teeth are the very last to develop and come in for adults over the age of about 18. Unfortunately, most people do not have enough room for these teeth to fully come in. This causes the teeth to become impacted, which means that they are essentially stuck underneath the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can be painful and even detrimental to your oral and dental health.

Why would Wisdom Teeth Removal be needed?

If you leave impacted wisdom teeth alone, they can eventually become problematic. They may begin to cause surrounding teeth to shift or crack. You might have problems with recurrent headaches and earaches without any other probable cause. Many people who have impacted wisdom teeth will deal with pain, tenderness and swollen gums.

Who is a candidate for Wisdom Teeth Removal?

To determine if your wisdom teeth need to be removed, we will perform an exam and take special x-rays. These x-rays allow us to see if you have impacted wisdom teeth and if so, their exact position. If you do have impacted wisdom teeth, it is better to have them removed as soon as possible. This prevents them from causing problems to your oral and dental health later on.

What can be expected during Wisdom Teeth Removal?

We will start by administering anesthetic or providing you with a sedative. We will discuss sedative options during your consultation appointment for surgery. We then make an incision through the gums and remove the underlying wisdom tooth. Sutures are placed to close the gums and we repeat the process for any other wisdom teeth needing to be removed. The surgery goes very quickly, and any pain or swelling that you experience will go away in just a few days. Post-operative care instructions can help teach you how to care for your mouth while it is healing from the surgery.
