Sealants

What are Sealants?

Dental sealants are protective coatings that can be applied to the back teeth. This clear varnish helps to fill in the deep grooves and ridges on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. As a result, these areas are protected against tooth decay until the time the sealant wears off. Most sealants can last for about one to three years, and they can be reapplied as often as needed.

Why might Sealants be needed?

We might recommend sealants to patients who have deep grooves and ridges on their back teeth. These areas can be difficult or even impossible to keep clean. This makes them more susceptible to tooth decay, which would eventually lead to needing fillings, root canals and even total extractions. Alternatively, sealants are ideal for pediatric patients who may not have the best brushing or eating habits.

Who is a candidate for Sealants?

Sealants are typically applied to pediatric baby teeth, but they can be beneficial for adult patients as well. We can examine your teeth to determine if you might benefit from dental sealants. If you have sealants currently, we can check to make sure they are still in place and can reapply them as needed. Your sealants can easily last for a few years depending on the amount of wear they receive.

What happens during the Sealant procedure?

The sealant procedure will begin by cleaning the back teeth and completely drying the chewing surfaces. We then brush a clear varnish over this area and cure it with a bright light. The process is repeated for all of the back teeth as a way to keep them protected. Your new sealants are completely clear, so no one but the dental experts can tell that they’re in place. If you’re a parent, you might want to consider the benefits that sealants can have for your child’s smile. It is never too late to consider sealants for yourself or a loved one.
