What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are designed to cover damaged or compromised teeth while simultaneously enhancing your smile. They are made of natural-looking and durable materials, like porcelain and ceramic, and are meant to last for many years. You may need a crown if a tooth has broken, cracked or has recently been root canaled. We even offer same-day CEREC crowns that prevent the need for a second visit just to place the permanent crown.

Why might a Dental Crown be needed?

Crowns are one of the most common restorations placed around the world. They are helpful in restoring a damaged tooth to its original size and shape. You might need a crown if a tooth has cracked, broken, fractured or if you’ve recently had a root canal performed. For some teeth, there is such a large area of decay or filling material that it is best to simply crown the tooth.

Who is a candidate for a Dental Crown?

To determine if a crown is necessary, we will examine your smile and check all of your teeth. Most patients who need or want a dental crown can safely have the restoration placed. In fact, if you need a crown, it is best to have it placed as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the underlying tooth. Older crowns that are showing signs of wear can and should be replaced with a new one.

What happens during the Dental Crown procedure?

We begin the crown process with an anesthetic that is used to numb one whole area within the mouth. The tooth is filed down to create a small stump, or abutment, for the new crown to sit on top. Impressions are taken and used to craft the actual permanent crown. You’ll then come back into the office to have the crown placed. Our same-day CEREC crowns are done in our office, preventing the need for a second visit. This option involves taking digital impressions and using these to make the permanent crown in our office while you wait for it.
