What is Botox?

Botox is an injections that is best known for its cosmetic benefits. However, when it comes to the field of dentistry, the injection can be helpful in improving the lives of our patients. Oftentimes, we will use Botox to help improve TMJ dysfunction and discomfort as well as to help denture patients find it easier to wear their prosthetic appliances. Botox is safe, effective and can be used for more than just cosmetic purposes.

Why would Botox be needed?

There are a few uses for Botox in the dental field. The most common is for patients who have TMJ disorders. The joint connecting the lower jaw to the face might feel stiff, swollen and painful. Botox helps to relax this joint so that it moves easier and is less uncomfortable. Botox can even be used for patients who wear dentures and are having a hard time with the prosthetic hitting the gums and lips.

Who is a candidate for Botox?

Botox is typically safe for most adult patients coming into our office. We will review all health and medical history that you provide us with to ensure that this treatment is right for you. It’s important to remember that Botox is not a permanent solution. In order to continue seeing the results, you’ll need retreatment every few months.

What happens during the Botox procedure?

The procedure for Botox is quite easy and straightforward. You first sit comfortably in one of our operatories while we prepare the injection. We then apply a topical analgesic to the area where the injection is needed to make it more comfortable for you. We then inject Botox into the area where it is needed. You may need several injections to experience optimum results. You will need to come back into the office after a few months to have retreatment as the results begin to wear off. You can expect some slight pain and swelling around the injection site for the first two days following treatment.
